Alipay launches localized app for Hong Kong users

• ‘AlipayHK’ to allow HKD mobile payments, making it the first-ever version of the Alipay app to facilitate non-RMB transactions
• Over 2,000 stores to accept AlipayHK, including branches of leading brands such as PARKnSHOP, Maxim’s and Watsons

Hong Kong – May 24, 2017 – Alipay, the world’s largest online and mobile payment platform, operated by Ant Financial Services Group (“Ant Financial”, “Ant”), is launching AlipayHK, a version of its flagship app dedicated to local-currency payments in Hong Kong. The first-ever version of the Alipay app to handle non-Renminbi transactions, AlipayHK will bring Alipay’s seamless and secure mobile payment experience to local users, facilitating payments at over 2,000 bricks-and-mortar stores across the city.

“Mobile payments are gaining momentum around the world, with consumers and small businesses alike benefiting from their low cost and convenience,” said Douglas Feagin, Ant Financial’s President of Global Business. “Introducing local-currency mobile payments to Hong Kong is an important step forward in Ant Financial’s mission to bring our services to more users in more markets. We are looking forward to rolling out a wide variety of payment-related services for local users in Hong Kong.”

Starting May 25, over 2,000 bricks-and-mortar stores, including branches of Watsons, PARKnSHOP, Fortress, Watson’s Wine, Arome Bakery, Aji Ichiban, Hong Kong Maxim's Cakes and Maxim's MX, Chow Tai Fook, Sa Sa, Bonjour Cosmetics, I.T, Giordano, as well as world-renowned theme park Ocean Park, will accept AlipayHK. Currently, over 8,000 stores in Hong Kong accept the mainland China version of the Alipay app. Ultimately, all these stores will also accept AlipayHK.

“Alipay mobile payments are simple and secure, requiring users simply to present their unique QR code for scanning when making a purchase,” Venetia Lee, Alipay’s General Manager of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, said. “For retailers, Alipay’s interactive marketing platform makes interacting with customers and understanding their needs easier than ever before.”

Both iOS and Android users can download the AlipayHK app on their smartphone and link their account to their Visa or Mastercard. Users can also top-up their AlipayHK accounts at convenience stores across Hong Kong and via e-banking service providers such as Standard Chartered Bank.
AlipayHK is also integrating Hong Kong consumers’ favorite stamp-collecting reward scheme with the new app, meaning whether they are shopping or dining, they get the best deal they can with Alipay.

Users can also buy coupons from OpenRice, Hong Kong’s most popular online and mobile dining guide, in the AlipayHK app.

Mobile phone bill payments and insurance products will be available in the AlipayHK app soon.

Alipay has been actively driving a “cashless” lifestyle in mainland China and overseas. Users in cities like Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing have no need for a physical wallet, relying instead on Alipay for most of their daily payment needs. In addition to rolling out the same seamless Alipay experience to Chinese travelers in over 70 countries and regions across the world, Ant Financial has also introduced Alipay’s cashless solutions to local users in countries such as India, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and the United States, through cooperation with local strategic partners, improving economic efficiency and promoting inclusive finance globally.
